World Refill Day

TODAY is World Refill Day – a global public awareness campaign to help people live with less waste.

Over the last 18 months, we’ve seen a huge increase in single-use plastic and our parks, beaches and public spaces are overflowing with waste. We’ve seen governments backtrack on their commitments and many businesses have banned reusables cups and containers altogether.

We know that single-use plastic is a MASSIVE problem and it’s not something we can recycle, or beach clean our way out of. We need to turn off the tap when it comes to single-use plastic. We need a refill and reuse revolution!

World Refill Day is designed to mobilise individuals to make small changes to their everyday shopping, opting for reuse over single-use. As a global movement, we have the power to create a wave of change and show businesses, brands and governments that we still want to see action on plastic and reuse is the solution

City to Sea will making life easier for those looking to live with less waste by mapping the places people can fill up using the FREE Refill app. The app now connects conscious consumers to almost 300,000 places you eat, drink and shop with less plastic.

What are we asking people to do?

  1. This World Refill Day, choose to reuse and join millions of people around the world taking action to reduce plastic pollution.

  2. Say goodbye to single-use plastic and make small changes by switching to a reusable water bottle, trying a zero-waste shop or using a reusable coffee cup.

  3. Inspire change. Share a selfie of you and your reusable bottle, cup or container and tell the world you’re taking action on plastics by choosing to reuse this #WorldRefillDay.

  4. Download the free Refill app to find places to refill and reuse on the go.

  5. Use your voice! Let big businesses, brands and governments know that you want to see action to tackle single-use plastic.

Shockers:

  • Every year, we produce more than 300 million tonnes of plastic – up to half of which is single use.

  • Less than 10% has ever been recycled and the rest is sent to landfill, incineration or worse, is ending ended up in our natural environment and our oceans.

  • Plastic production is expected to double again over the next 20 years. and almost quadruple by 2050.

  • Globally, between 8 – 12 m tonnes of plastics leak into the ocean every year.

  • Packaging from take-away food and drinks is a huge cause of plastic pollution and items like coffee cups and take-away containers are consistently in the top 10 items found on beaches around the world9.

  • Globally we drink around 1.6 billion cups of takeaway coffee everyday and consume a mind blowing one million plastic bottles EVERY MINUTE.

  • NEW research reveals that just 10 plastic products make up 75% of all items and scientists say the pollution must be stopped at source.

  • These are items that can easily be replaced by reusable alternatives.

  • Despite this, reusable packaging represents less than 2% of packaging on the market
