One Minute Brief of the Day:
Advertise your local fast food joint for the chance to win the OMB @ChipShopAwards Challenge Chip!!
The Drum Chip Shop Awards have now been around for 15 years, but do you know the story of our origins? There was a time when Barnacles Fish & Chip shop in Llandudno was the talk of Soho. It’s advertising had just scooped a heap of awards - knocking bigger brands off the winners’ podium. The campaign was the work of an advertising nobody, Andy Cheetham. The client was his mum. His budget, was his beer money. His secret weapon was persistence.
Cheetham had been made redundant three times in three years and found design to be a tough career to get into, despite his experience he didn’t have the reputation to land a job.
The answer was awards, but you can’t win awards without a client, right? And that’s how Cheetham’s mum’s chippy became the project. The outcome was ads that were simple, strong and fresh ‘Other Chip Shops Don’t Give a Fork’ was the original. A year later the loophole was closed, and Cheetham’s Barnacle ads could no longer be entered but it got Cheetham to where he is today.
Andy’s story inspired us to start The Drum Chip Shop Awards and celebrate creativity without limits.
The awards are a place where professionals, students or anyone for that matter can compete on a level playing field, no matter how the piece of work came about, brief or no brief, client or no client, a great idea is still a great idea. And we know that the greatest ideas often come from the most unexpected places.
