CONTEXT:

Effects of climate change

Climate change is already having visible effects on the world. The earth is warming, rainfall patterns are changing, and sea levels are rising. These changes can increase the risk of heatwaves, floods, droughts, and fires.

A changing climate impacts crop growth and human health, while many people may need to leave their homes. It places certain species at an increased risk of extinction. The effects of climate change are real, and they are already happening.

Changes to the climate:

Warmer land, air and oceans

Since 1850, the global average surface temperature has increased by more than 1°C. The last five years (2016-2020) were the top five warmest since the pre-industrial period.

All of the UK’s ten warmest years on record have occurred since 2002.

Oceans also absorb around 25% of the carbon dioxide that humans release into the air. The oceans then become less alkaline, a process called 'ocean acidification'. Ocean acidification is bad because it can have negative effects on marine organisms, like coral and plankton, which are an important part of the food chain.

Melting ice

The ice in the Arctic is melting fast. It is already 65% thinner than it was in 1975, and if we do not reduce emissions soon, we could see ice-free summers in the Arctic by the middle of this century.

Glaciers are melting and have lost mass for 39 years in a row. This contributes to sea level rise and affects important ocean currents, like the Gulf Stream.

Arctic sea ice extent is declining by almost 12% per decade on average – equating to 87,000km2 (or an area greater than Scotland) per year.

Rising sea levels

Oceans absorb 90% of the extra heat generated by human influence. However, when water heats up, it expands to take up more volume. So, when oceans heat up, they expand too, causing the sea level to rise. We also have extra water flowing into the ocean from melting ice sheets and glaciers. Between 1902 and 2020, the global average sea level has risen by more than 20 centimetres.

Some parts of the planet, such as the north and south pole, warm more quickly than other places. At the poles, glaciers and ice sheets reflect energy from the sun into space. So, when there is less ice, less energy from the sun is reflected away. The area then heats even more quickly, causing even more ice to melt.

Mean sea level around the UK has risen by about 17 cm since the start of the 20th century.

More extreme weather

As the planet warms, heatwaves become more likely. Over the past few years, heatwaves have been the deadliest global weather hazard.

Warmer air can hold more water, so rainfall is increasing on average across the world. In some places, rainfall is becoming more intense as well. However, some areas receive less rain because of changes in wind patterns.

5 of the 10 wettest years in the UK (since 1862) have taken place in the 21st century.

Disruptive rainfall from the 2015 winter UK storms was made at least 40% more likely due to climate change.

Heatwaves like that of summer 2018 are now 30 times more likely to happen due to climate change.

UK snow events have declined since the 1960s.

At Sugar & Sloth we create cute & colourful characters to help those with anxiety & depression. We spread sunshine through our subscription box, motivational goodies and inclusive community.

And, next month we will be releasing our very first character plushie - Arnold the Emotional Support Dinosaur!

Arnold is our Passive-Aggressive Dinosaur character.

His social anxiety can often be mistaken for rudeness or disinterest, but deep down he's a cuddly, loving dinosaur who just wants to be understood - give him a hug and you'll see.

He is at his happiest snuggled in his blank burrito, which a good book and a plate of warm cookies.

A plushie is a soft toy, Arnold is 22cm long and filled with super soft stuffing, he is small enough to be travel size but still big enough to cuddle. We often think of plushies as just for children, by launching our Sugar & Sloth plushie range we want to combat the stigma of adults owning plushes, allowing them to enjoy the mental health benefits soft toys can bring.

Plushies are very powerful tools, bringing a sense of security and reduces negative feelings, such as loneliness and anxiety. We all know pets can make us happier, and studies have shown soft toys can have the same effect. Plushies like Arnold can become powerful grounding tools to reduce anxiety levels.

About mahabis:

we’re mahabis. footwear for time well spent

the thing that gets us out of bed in the morning? our mission to help the world spend its time well.

it’s a big mission, but it’s one we believe in.

because we believe that time well spent leads to a life well lived.

our story

our founders noticed that people were only allowing themselves time for enjoyment after their to-do lists were completed.

so they set out to create a product that helped people realise that doing very little can also be time well spent.

why footwear?

they’re the things that carry us through life.

mahabis took the world’s most comfortable shoe – the slipper – and ripped up the rulebook to create something functional. something beautiful. something that enhances every minute of whatever you're doing.

designed for comfort

life’s complex. our designs aren’t.

we like to keep things minimal, so you can get on with enjoying your time without distractions.

our london-based design team have created some pretty special features you won’t find on your regular run-of-the-mill slippers.

like our neoprene heel cradle which gently holds your foot in place as you walk. especially on stairs, slippers’ nemesis.

and our hybrid soles, which make it simple for you to pop out whenever you like, without the admin of changing your shoes. because we’ve all got better things to do.

we do things properly

all of our major suppliers are sedex audited and in compliance with the ethical trade initiative. this means the people making mahabis are treated well, paid a fair wage, and provided with a safe working environment.

we put mahabis through their paces.

we work with satra, a leading independent research and testing footwear organisation, to ensure our footwear meets the highest durability, abrasion and sizing standards.

part of this process is putting mahabis through their paces. over a million in fact. and they more than stand up to the task.

Who are we?

Essentially a large group of professionals from the parks sector have come together to form the Parks Management Association. At present the representatives are voluntary – no paid staff, just a network of likeminded individuals - passionate about parks and their value!

What are we trying to do?

We have identified the need for a well co-ordinated campaign that highlights the urgent requirement for proper investment in public parks, and the fact that central Government funding is the only practical way to achieve this.

A key aim should be to address the inequality of access to parks - both in quantity and quality between neighbourhoods, as  this disproportionately affects people who live in the most deprived communities.

The public are mostly unaware of the declining standards of their parks, as deterioration has been gradual and often goes unnoticed. People also aren’t fully aware of how good their parks could be with proper funding and of the resulting benefits to them and their community.
In a nutshell - The UK is still living off the glory days of the parks revolution of the Victorian era… but the reality is that the UK is now in urgent need of a 21st Century parks reinvestment programme.

Targeted at who?

We would like all MPs to take action by recognising this issue and form plans in parliament to address it. We would also like to raise awareness to the public that the current picture in parks isn’t all rosy.  What is widely accepted in the sector is that the ‘plight’ of parks has been known by successive governments for a long time and nothing has been done about it (see Government Response to the Communities and Local Government Select Committee Report: The Future of Public Parks)

Some of the key evidence on funding requirements:

  • Friends of the Earth – ‘England’s Green Space Gap’ – Recommends: £2 billion per year for the next 5 years, together with an additional and ongoing £2 billion on annual maintenance and community engagement

  • National Trust - Levelling Up and Building Back Better Through Urban Green Infrastructure – Suggests: £5.5billion capital investment (over 5 years) would deliver £200billion in physical health and wellbeing benefits

  • Parks Alliance (part of the Landscape Institute) - Making Parks Count – the Case for Parks - States: “parks in England deliver over £6.6 billion of health, climate change and environmental benefits each year including £2.2 billion in avoided health costs alone and are worth £140 per year to each urban resident. For every £1 spent on parks in England an estimated £7 in additional value for health and wellbeing and the environment is generated.”

  • Fields in TrustRevaluing Parks and Green Spaces – Found that: “frequent personal use of parks and green spaces is worth over £30 billion a year to the UK population. That value translates into estimated savings for the NHS of at least £100 million a year from fewer GP visits”

  • The Charter for Parks - https://parkscharter.org.uk/ - Calls for action: “by all politicians, and in particular the Prime Minister, the First Ministers of Scotland and Wales, and the First Minister and deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland, to adopt the six points of the Parks Charter.”

  • All-Party Parliamentary Group on Parks and Green Spaces APPG - Through bringing together key stakeholders from local authorities to Parliamentarians, the group addresses the most urgent issues affecting our green spaces, including but not limited to funding

One Minute Brief of the Day: Create posters to help get @ZedTrafficker a well-deserved job in the creative industry!! #GetZedAJob

Today’s brief is dedicated to one of our most prolific and supportive OMBLES.

Ze Anwar won a Special Achievement Award at our last annual event and has previously won OMBLE of the Year awards, as voted for by our followers. This is all the more remarkable when you consider that Zed doesn’t even work in the industry. He has been working on the frontline to ensure that PPE equipment is delivered to hospital staff to keep everyone safe.

Zed is also on the OMBoard, with a focus on diversity and inclusion. Having faced a lot of barriers in the industry, it’s important as a community that we support Zed and break through those barriers to get him a role in the industry that he so rightly deserves.

Despite having an exceptional portfolio of ideas and being responsible for the concepts for hugely viral campaigns for Isabella and WWF, Zed has found opportunities limited… and the door shut.

So how will the OMBLES help open that door? Let’s make some noise and show the industry what they are missing. Let’s #GetZedAJob

IMG_20190228_130408.jpg

Please tweet your entries to @OneMinuteBriefs, @ZedTrafficker with the hashtag #GetZedAJob

Remembering to put your twitter handle in the corner of your submissions.

Feel free to tag in relevant people and agencies to help make this happen.

Prize: Copy of OMBook4.

Check out some of Zed’s work at: zedtrafficker.com

See some of Zed’s brilliant OMB entries here too: twitter.com/ZedTrafficker

Zed’s idea for the Isabella Neuroblastoma film led to a film that had tens of millions of views and raised a massive amount of money in the process. Sadly, Isabella passed away but she was an inspiration to us all as a community and the money raised went to charity as she left an amazing legacy that has seen the hospice she visited saved from closure.

Screenshot 2021-04-26 at 09.40.53.png

Zed’s idea for the WWF saw the removal of nature from brands/teams we know and love. The beautiful simplicity has seen a campaign one month ago to get brands involved and saw media reach of HALF A BILLION! This is potentially the start of a movement that can grow year on year. And that is the power of an instinctive idea like this.

Want ideas like this? Or know someone who would?

There’s a great prize for the winning entry too!

Picture this: you’re ready to submit possibly the finest OMB you’ve ever created, but just as you prepare to hit ‘send’, some sneaky cybercriminal hacks into your server and steals all your ideas – and your data too.

We know, it’s too heart-breaking to imagine. But bear with us.

Today’s OMB is designed to get people thinking about the cyber security risks lurking in the background when we’re away from the traditional workplace.

The hybrid world of work is here to stay and brings a raft of benefits with it. But we can’t forget the data security risks that come with being away from the usual corporate setting.

Millions of people are working from home using their own broadband routers, which may be several years old, are unlikely to have had any security updates since they were installed, and are probably using the standard factory settings/passwords as when they first arrived! Hardly belt and braces!

And have you ever wondered what dangers lurk when you head to a café or co-working space and connect to an unsecure open WiFi network?

Cloud technology specialist Vapour has launched today’s brief to encourage businesses to think about the millions of employees who may be unwittingly putting corporate network and data security at risk – just by doing their job!

You wouldn’t leave your front door open along with a sign saying: ‘Security free house, come in and help yourself’ – so why do the same with your tech?

This long-standing security concern isn’t going to go away – in fact, with the death of the traditional office 9-5, it’s only going to get bigger. Businesses that think they’ve got a robust hybrid working set-up, just because their colleagues can log on from anywhere, need to pay much sharper attention to their network and data security.

That’s why Vapour has launched a hybrid working solution, that integrates endpoint and network security through state-of-the-art SD-WAN technologies, to reduce organisations’ exposure to cyber threats, regardless of where employees decide to work from one day to the next.

So, OMBLES, let’s try to get to the route(r) of the problem!

The winning design will…

…cleverly highlight the cyber risks associated with hybrid working, if organisations don’t better protect their colleagues’ devices.

Who is setting today’s brief?

Established in 2013, Vapour is the hidden technology behind powerful business.

The organisation has been cloud-focused since day one - disrupting, innovating, demystifying. They work with organisations to unlock growth, drive change, boost productivity and remove headaches, with high-performance strategic technology at the heart. Simple. Clever. Always there.

Clients include ambitious micro-businesses and SMEs through to renowned high street brands such as JCT600 and Betfred.

About the project:

Welcome to the Diversity Type Project. At distillery, we embrace diversity. No matter who you are, we believe you have something to share with the world.

This is a unique opportunity to bring our differences together to create a brand new typeface that celebrates diversity and inclusion. With contributions coming from all corners of the world, we’ll be bringing together letters and numbers from the Latin alphabet inspired by hundreds of individual stories and experiences. We’ll then combine the best submissions into a downloadable typeface that will be available for everyone and anyone to use.

No matter your skill set, distillery  wants you to join us by contributing a character design inspired by your own personal story, background, or life experiences.

And if design isn’t for you, you can also get involved by helping us name the typeface with a great story or word that really means something to you.

What’s more, with an embedded ‘download to donate’ mechanic, we’ll also be raising money to help charities and organisations that celebrate diversity around the world.

We want this typeface to build awareness by unifying communities and cultures, and celebrating the differences in people's lived experiences. All in one place. By asking people to donate in order to use the font, we are  helping to support organisations who  champion more marginalised communities, cultures and groups.

The Diversity Type will be available for brands to use on World Diversity Day, 21st May 2021.

One Minute Brief of the Day: Create billboard-style posters featuring impactful headlines to help encourage people to come back to the city of Manchester, safely but confidently. #UnitedCity

After the success of our previous collaboration, we’re excited to collaborate with #UnitedCity today.

Following the last brief, we became official members of United City and, as OMB is from Manchester, we hope that all the OMBLES will get behind this brief once again today!!

One week after the easing of restrictions, we’re looking for simple headline-based billboards that encourage people to come back into Manchester city centre, safely but confidently.

How would you grab the attention of people and deliver this message in as a few words as possible?

MWDEC18-146350_xgaplus (1).jpg

Manchester has given us so much, so it is now time to give something back. As businesses and people, we need our city, and now our city needs us.

Our campaign needs to be a bold and confident rally cry for business leaders and people to come back to the city centre – safely but confidently.

Please tweet your submissions to @OneMinuteBriefs & @UnitedCity with the hashtag #UnitedCity

Please also tag in @RDPRTweets, @OBIproperty, @GG_Hospitality & @Bruntwood_UK

Prize: £200 cash prize to today’s winner.

We want to remind businesses that cities thrive because of the people and it is the people that put the heart and the financial stability into the city centre.

Tone of voice is:

  • As always, Manchester looks after its people, we’re not going to let you down

  • As a city we are invincible together and we need to be together

  • Your city needs you

  • What’s a city without its people?

  • Your city has been here for you, you need to be here for your city

  • Use it or lose it

  • Our comeback will be greater than the set back

BACKGROUND:

UnitedCity is a group of Manchester city centre business leaders who are working together to call on peers to actively encourage and support their teams in a safe return to the city centre to ensure its economic recovery.  Business owners and venues across the Manchester city have already invested £100,000s to make workplaces COVID secure.

UnitedCity, backed by Sir Richard Leese and run by Gary Neville, Chris Oglesby, Will Lewis, and Lisa Morton will deliver campaigns and initiatives to encourage businesses and people back into Manchester City Centre in the coming months, as well as providing a membership and resources for businesses who are bringing their team back to the office.

Chris Oglesby, CEO of Bruntwood commented,

“We obviously understand the need to counter a safe return with individuals’ concerns around health and safety in offices and access to the city centre via different methods of transport. Within the steering group we have professionals who can support and advise business leaders to ensure that they are able to practically and emotionally support their returning workforces.

“It goes without saying that the city’s eco-system is broken without a confident and collective return to work and that an economic recovery for the city - and millions of people who rely on that eco-system -  is impossible without a shared impetus to get this city moving again.”

One Minute Brief of the Day: Create posters to encourage pharmaceutical companies and governments to put people before profits & drop their vaccine patents. #PeoplesVaccine @Oxfam @PeoplesVaccine

Today’s One Minute Brief is an important one in collaboration with Oxfam and there are some great prizes to be won. We hope the OMBLES will help share this powerful message and encourage action.

Whatever your views on the vaccine, there’s one thing for certain…it should never be about money and only the richer countries being given access to it. That’s why we’re supporting today’s campaign to ensure that vaccines are available to all who want to take it and to encourage the relevant people to take action so that this is about people not profits.

The People’s Vaccine Alliance is a coalition of over 50 organisations worldwide - urging pharmaceutical corporations and governments (especially the wealthy countries) to do everything they can to ensure COVID19 vaccines are available all people, in all countries, free of charge.

Right now, governments are defending Big Pharma monopolies that are dictating who lives and who dies – allowing them to keep the recipe (science, technology and know-how – also known as the ‘patents’) of the vaccine for themselves.  No one company can produce enough for the whole world. So long as vaccine solutions are kept under lock and key, there will not be enough to go around.

We need some fresh, creative poster and simple, impactful headlines to help us to continue building momentum around and action toward a People’s vaccine, not a profit vaccine.

PeoplesVaccine_LogoRBG-01.png

Please tweet your entries to @OneMinuteBriefs, @Oxfam and @PeoplesVaccine with the hashtag #PeoplesVaccine & link to peoplesvaccine.org

You can also use the other campaign hashtags #TripsWaiver #JoinCTAP

Prizes

  • First Place: £200

  • Second place: £100

  • Shortlisted entries could also be shared by the People’s Vaccine Alliance!

Context:

Our best chance of all staying safe is to ensure a COVID-19 vaccine is available for all as a global common good. This will only be possible with a transformation in how vaccines are produced and distributed — pharmaceutical corporations must allow the COVID-19 vaccines to be produced as widely as possible by sharing their knowledge free from patents.

Instead, they are protecting their monopolies and putting up barriers to restrict production and drive-up prices, leaving us all in danger. And the governments of rich countries are protecting them to do so. No one company can produce enough for the whole world. So long as vaccine solutions are kept under lock and key, there won’t be enough to go around. We need a People’s Vaccine, not a profit vaccine.

microsoftteams-image2.png

Aim:

To create posters to support our campaigning efforts around the annual shareholder meetings of big pharmaceutical companies who currently have a monopoly over the COVID-19 vaccines.

Vaccine inequality is at its worst right now, with rich countries vaccinating 1 person every second, while the majority of poor countries have yet to give a single dose.

Over the month of April, we will work to pressure big pharma to put people before their profits, by dropping their vaccine patents to enable generic drug companies to produce COVID-19 vaccines and treatments at a larger scale and at a cheaper price to ensure everyone on the planet has the opportunity to get one as quickly as possible.

microsoftteams-image3.png

Objective

On April 22nd, Johnson & Johnson and Pfizer will be holding their annual shareholder meetings, and the World Trade Organization will continue debating whether to waive patent legislation that’s preventing the science of the vaccines from being shared.

Rich country governments can help shift power by coming out in support of the WTO waiver, while pharma companies like J&J and Pfizer can volunteer to share the science so everyone can get a vaccine. We intend to use both of these moments as part of our Global Week of Action for a People’s Vaccine to pressure both targets to ensure a people’s vaccine over a profit vaccine.

In order to pressure rich country governments, they need to see these pharma companies feeling public pressure though media, social media and direct action from concerned citizens.  The posters produced in partnership with One Minute Briefs will become a one of several tools we’ll use to help garner public and political attention.

One Minute Brief of the Day: Create posters to promote and celebrate the first ever #GerryAndersonDay with @GerryAndersonTV

We’ve got a very exciting and meaningful brief today dedicated a legend of the creative/media industry and to celebrate the first ever day dedicated to the man himself. His son Jamie, a legend of the film industry himself, approached us to see if the OMBLES will help to spread the word and make a big impact across social media today. So I hope you’ll all join me and help make today extra special!!

We're celebrating his life and legacy with an international day of celebration and have some great partnerships lined up for the day itself.

- Jamie Anderson

Please tweet your entries to @OneMinuteBriefs and @GerryAndersonTV with the hashtag #GerryAndersonDay

One Minute Brief of the Day: Create billboard-style posters using simple headlines inspiring people to take positive action & stick to the rules as things begin to open up. #LetsGetThereSooner

In the second instalment of our partnership with the #LetsGetThereSooner campaign, we’re going for copy simplicity. How can you deliver an important message in as little words as possible? We want to still go against the grain and show positive messages rather than the doom and gloom we’ve been used to see.

This is a great chance to test our your copy skills and have fun with a great brief following the relaxation of the rules yesterday and people heading back to pubs, restaurants and non-essential shops.

Really looking forward to what the OMBLES come up with for this one!!

One Minute Brief of the Day:

Create billboard-style posters using super-simple headlines inspiring people to take positive action by sticking to the rules as pubs, restaurants & shops begin to open up. #LetsGetThereSooner

Thank you to all the OMBLES who have joined in this campaign so far. As the rules relax we believe we need to encourage everyone to continue to stick to the rules so we can all get back to as normal a life as soon as possible.

The brief this time is a poster using a simple headline inspiring people to take positive action by sticking to the rules. See example 'Happy times are near again', which was great as it got the message across in just 5 words! This is an opportunity to flex your copywriting muscles.

We are hoping to get the winning entries up on the streets very soon!!

Thank you for all your support. We’re looking forward to seeing this campaign develop into something BIG!

#LetGetThereSooner

About:

We all want lockdown to be over and get back to the things – and people – we love. But to get there, we have to collectively stick to the rules just a little while longer.

A group of UK advertising luminaries, led by Sir Nigel Bogle, have grown frustrated with the gloomy tone of their country’s coronavirus campaigns. Instead, they think we can get there sooner with a more positive campaign encouraging people to share what they’re looking forward to after lockdown.

They’ve created their alternative ad campaign, which you can watch below…

One Minute Brief of the Day: Create posters to promote the real #OMBLES... full of amazing characters, sweet ideas, masses of support and a generous serving of community spirit.

Over the weekend, my friend sent me a picture of the M&S chocolate Ombles asking if it was anything to do with me. This followed loads of texts and tweets I’ve received about them and @OneMinuteBriefs has been tagged in lots of images when the Ombles have been spotted by our OMBLES and beyond.

When we first heard about the release of The Ombles, all the original OMBLES were excited to promote their chocolate namesake. However, after several conversations and attempts to collab, we were ultimately ignored and they didn’t respond to any of the tweets from our community.

So since we were unable to run a campaign with them, we are running one ourselves to advertise our very own #OMBLES!!

One Minute Brief of the Day:

Create posters to promote the real #OMBLES and celebrate the ingredients that make up @OneMinuteBriefs… full of amazing characters, sweet ideas, masses of support and a generous serving of community spirit. Reaching hundreds and thousands daily.

About:

By now everyone has probably seen or heard about M&S’s cheeky characters named The Ombles. For the first time in almost 30 years, M&S has created a new character in the form of milk chocolate faces smothered in chocolate flakes complete with chocolate googly eyes.

These cute and charmingly odd creatures Ombles are full of character, super energetic and LOVE to accessorise with quirky sunglasses and hats.

Very much like the real OMBLES!!

How will you advertise our very own cheeky characters?

With nearly 33,000 OMBLES, we’re excited to see how the real OMBLES celebrate and promote each other and the community as a whole.

  • Think about the things we’ve achieved individually and as a team and what we can achieve together in the future.

  • Think about the different characters who enter each day and what makes them unique.

  • Think about all the tasty bite-size ideas that collectively make huge impacts.

  • Think about some of the things we’ve done over the last year bankofcreativity.co.uk/blog/powerofcommunity and more recently going viral with KitKat, Marmite and WWF.
