The brief

Draw from your creativity! The Canva Draw app is here, letting you draw, highlight, and take notes in your Canva designs. From posters to presentations, it’s the perfect way to add your finishing touches and strokes of creativity. By the time you had read that opening paragraph, you could have created a Canva design, doodled on it, shipped it, and popped the kettle on for your afternoon tea. It’s that easy.

The Draw app allows users to draw and write freehand for the first time in Canva! This provides our users with even more flexibility in the way they design, so they can better realise their creative goals without having to switch to other apps. And best of all it’s free!

  • The app allows for basic drawing/annotation in Canva with a selection of brushes and controls.

Why your immune system is incredible

Understanding the immune system has led to some of the greatest innovations in medicine; from the rapid development of covid vaccines, to the development of the latest and greatest generation of cancer treatments. As a scientific field, immunology offers a very broad and very detailed understanding of how the immune system functions in principle. This understanding encompasses a whole universe of beautiful complexity.

Despite the wealth of knowledge we now have on how the immune system works, it will surprise you to learn however that we have very limited understanding of how an individual's immune system works and on a personal level and what that means for an individual's health.

When it comes to our immune systems, things get very personal. Our immune system knows us inside out on a molecular level. It is capable of recognising and remembering everything that makes you, you. Your immune system can recognise every virus and bacteria that will ever exist and it's able to tell the difference between the two, but that’s true for everyone. It is truly a remarkable construct of evolution.

When it's working well, your immune system is truly a superpower but when it's not working well, it can leave us exposed to a wide array of infections, cancers and even cause disease itself.

Make up
Your immune system is made up of billions of cells with huge variation in their purpose and design. These cells work together through complex communication channels that monitor your environment and respond to the multitude of threats from foreign bodies trying to make you their home. This battleground for your good health occurs in and under your skin 24 hours a day!

Your first line of defence
Innate immunity is the first line of defence, using identical mechanisms to fight all types of pathogens and foreign antigens. It is rapid and initiated within minutes or hours after encountering antigens, involving white blood cells (immune cells) such as neutrophils, basophils and natural killer cells. To call this unsophisticated is wrong but another level of sophistication exists within your adaptive immune system.

Your immune system never forgets

When innate immunity needs more assistance, it calls on your adaptive immunity to provide a more specific response towards a pathogen, at the same time building up memory to fight the same pathogen more rapidly and efficiently upon re-exposure.

Many of the immune cells involved in adaptive immunity circulate in your bloodstream, such as T and B cells, which migrate to the site of infection to either directly kill infected cells or help produce antibodies against the unwanted intruder.

Through more understanding of every immune system but specifically, your immune system, you will learn to appreciate the effects of vaccines, medical treatments, ‘immune boosting’ techniques, disease, sickness, historic illnesses, diet and exercise and how these all impact on the effectiveness of your most incredible system

What is encryption?

Encryption is the method by which information is converted into secret code that hides the information's true meaning. Encryption has been a longstanding way for sensitive information to be protected. Historically, it was used by militaries and governments. In modern times, encryption is used to protect data stored on computers and storage devices, as well as data in transit over networks.

Context:

The UK Home Office has commissioned a campaign that undermines public support for encryption. The campaign is likely to feature people ‘blindfolded’ so they can’t see the contents of messages, with a message that encryption is allowing bad people to do bad things.

We want a creative rebuttal to this campaign. Encryption is used by us all to keep our personal messages private. Encryption protects women using disappearing messages to escape an abusive partner. Encryption protects whistleblowers confiding in journalists about political corruption or corporate illegality. It helps keep political dissidents and human rights activists safe. Encryption protects all people to freely express themselves to their loved ones in confidence. Encryption stops passwords or PINs shared on texts from being abused by criminals.

If the UK Home Office gets its way, the UK will be alone in the world for breaking encryption alongside the Chinese surveillance state under President Xi.

Encryption is used everywhere right now to keep information safe and secure. You can find this security on messaging apps such as Signal, Telegram and Whatsapp, in our banking apps and in wellbeing and healthcare applications. Despite its ubiquity and importance, strong, end-to-end encryption is under attack by the UK Home Office.

End to end encryption is vital to our society and economy. Encryption means that:

● You can exchange private messages and images securely with your family.

● Your doctor and the NHS can transfer your private medical information online.

● You can speak to a therapist or social worker about sensitive issues at home.

● Anything you want to keep private can not be seen by unintended viewers.

Opponents of encryption have framed the technology as a roadblock for law enforcement agencies driving a media narrative that focuses on it being used to mask criminal activity online. Governments around the world have called for law enforcement agencies to be granted ‘exceptional access’ which would allow them to access encrypted messages through a ‘backdoor’.

But backdoor access will create vulnerabilities in these platforms that could be exploited by online criminals, or hostile governments, endangering the security of billions of people online and in real life.

Put simply, people have a natural desire for safety. Opponents of encryption have used fear mongering to set the political weather against its use. We need to flip people’s perceptions and celebrate how encryption keeps us all safe everyday.

Why do we need electric cars?

What’s the brief?
